The world of golf can feel very elusive. As an elite sport it has developed its own lingo that bears a strange affinity for the world of ornithology. If you are unfamiliar with Golf terms, make sure to take a look at this basic glossary!
Par: The number of strokes that a golfer should take to complete the hole. On a Par 4 you need to do 4 Strokes if you do more than 4 strokes you are no longer "in par" with the hole.
Birdie: Completing the hole in one less stroke than the par.
Bogey: Completing the hole in one more stroke than the par.
Double Bogey: Completing the hole in two more strokes than the par (catch the trend?).
Eagle: Completing the hole in two fewer strokes than the par.
Albatross: Completing the hole in three fewer strokes than the par and is sometimes known as a ‘double eagle’.
Hole in One: Hitting it in the hole on your first shot. Normally you see these in Par 3 holes as they are very short in distance.
Green: The area of finely trimmed grass at the end of each hole. From here, you will be able to accurately putt into the hole.
Rough: The areas of longer grass that line the fairway.
Head to Head and Tournament matches
Shots: the number of shots performed by you
Par 3: you must putt the ball on max. 4 strokes (hits with the golf club) or lower to have the best score.
Hole 3: it's the third hole of 18.
Tournament Leaderboard
You have 4 different lines in the Tournament scoreboard:
- Hole: number of the hole.
- Par: the number of strokes that you should take to complete the hole.
- Strokes taken: the number of strokes you took to complete it. A plain number means that you scored a Par (took the same number of strokes as the Par). The circle means that you took fewer strokes than the par. The square means that you took more stroke than the par.
- Points earned: you need to score at least a Birdie to gain points for the tournaments. Strokes are worth points, the more strokes you make in a hole the less points you win.
In the tournament leaderboard, you can see:
- Status of the playthrough: finished or a specific hole.
- Score: the number of fewer strokes that you took to complete the course (-6 less strokes than the Par, as also show in the above screenshot).
- Points: total of points earned.
The Par numbers are set bye the difficulty of the fairway and distance from tee, the place where you start the hole, to the flag. Each hole has its own design, some have lakes, bunkers even hills, the more difficult and long the higher the Par.
Bear in mind that the basic rule of Golf is get to the hole in the minimum hits possible. Hole in One being the best shot one can do obviously.
